Donation of Used Smartphones

Good morning,

One of the main reasons William Hall High School is an outstanding school is because of the wonderful support the families and community members of West Hartford provides. With the holiday season in full swing, I would like to reach out to our families and ask for your assistance.

At Hall High School, we strive for academic excellence every day for every child. One of the many pedagogical methods we use is harnessing technology whenever appropriate, specifically using smart phones in the classroom. Some examples of how smartphones are used in the classroom include:

  • Using apps like Polleverywhere.com to quickly assess a whole classes' understanding of a topic
  • Quick reference (dictionary.com, world language translators, fact checking)
  • Apps like Quizlet that allow students to make flash cards and review topics

Teachers and students everyday are also discovering new and innovative ways to harness smartphones (or as I call them in school, mobile learning devices).

And while it seems having a smartphone is automatic for any teenager, and I recognize some families choose not to have their teenagers have a smartphone, other families simply cannot afford one.

To help close this digital divide, some families may take the holiday season as an opportunity to upgrade their current device leaving them with the question, "What do I do with my old device?".

I would hope you might consider donating your old device to Hall High School so students can check out the device through the library media center and use it during school by harnessing the wi-fi access.

We would be happy to give you a receipt for your donation so you can apply a tax deduction if applicable.

Specifically, this is what we are looking for:

  • An Apple, Android, or Google Nexus smartphone in good working condition (no cracked screens, please)
  • Please reset all data and erase any passwords on the device
  • If possible, provide any serial number (if not already on the phone) or other documentation
  • If possible, any power cords or charging cables, especially if it is not a more popular model like an Iphone or Samsung Galaxy

You or your child can drop off your device in the main office. We will ask for the name and address you would like us to send the donation receipt letter to. Thanks in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Dan Zittoun
Principal
